Two Riveroaks families are being called to overseas ministry with
Mission to the World (MTW). The Barnes and Brinks began this journey in the early part of 2011, and in God’s providence were steered towards the MTW team serving in Madrid. Spain is known to be a sunny place, but it is quite dark spiritually. Less than 0.5% of Spaniards are evangelical Christian, and the younger generation is particularly opposed to the Christian church. The Spanish are very politically-minded, and in their minds the church is closely linked with harsh rule that has dominated much of their history.
There is much brokenness in Spain, but there is also great opportunity. The Lord is at work in many ways, and one of those is through the MTW team serving in Madrid. God is using MTW and a handful of national-led churches to point Spaniards to Christ and to counter the folly of Madrid's secular and humanistic culture. One of the biggest needs for outreach is on the college campus, so this will be the primary focus of the Barnes and Brinks.
This is an exciting journey, and it is one that needs the support of many. Please take a minute to learn about the need in Spain, the work the MTW team is doing, and how you can play a role.
The Need in Spain
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tell me more about the team currently serving in Madrid?
The MTW team is based in urban Madrid and is involved in a variety of ministries that are ultimately aimed at
planting churches. There are two pastors on the team, one of whom is the team leader, Charles DeWitt. The team is relatively small right now (6-7 people), but is growing rapidly! Including us, there are four young families currently raising support to join the team in Madrid.
What kind of work will you be doing?
Both of our families will be primarily focused on university ministry and outreach among young adults in the city. Since there is currently no evangelical presence on the campus, a large part of our efforts will be in planting seeds and building relationships. Our goal, by God's grace, is to build Christian community among college students while pointing them to the local church.
How long is your commitment to MTW?
We are committed to a 3-year term in Spain.
When do you leave?
Our
departure is dependent upon our fundraising. We have a lot of money to
raise, and we cannot get on a plane until we are 100% funded. Our goal
is the fall of 2012, but that may change as the process continues.
How can I help?
Pray!
We need a lot of prayer during both our fundraising and our eventual
work on the field. You can also help by committing to be a financial
supporter. We need a lot of people partnering with us, and it is our
hope that you will be stirred to join in this work of proclaiming the
gospel in Spain.
Are you raising support together?
No,
each family has its own budget. If you're interested in our ministry
and want to support both of us, that is great! If you can only support
one of us, that is fine too.
How can I give?
The greatest need is for monthly supporters, since that's what makes up the bulk of our budget. But there is also a need for one-time gifts. We are happy to have you on our team in whatever capacity.
To support us monthly, you can
download this E-giving form to fill out and mail to MTW. To support us with a one-time gift, you can
donate online here by selecting the family's name in the drop down box.
