International Student Ministry
As a visiting missionary shared, there are international citizens within the city of Memphis. We find such a mission field with the international students studying at the University of Memphis. Eventually, they will be going to the far reaches of the globe where most of us will never travel. They want to learn the English language and to see what an American home is like. This is where we can help. Riveroaks families are encouraged to "adopt" international students by periodically hosting them for dinners and by displaying acts of service.
How it works
Two to three Riveroaks families are grouped together to collectively minister to a trio of international students. The students will likely be comprised of varying levels of English skills to ensure that at least one student in a trio is at a high level. We encourage the Riveroaks families to host a monthly dinner or gathering in someone's home. These can take the form of potlucks, game nights, holidays, etc.
How to Serve
These students share a separation from friends and family, and they have a variety of
needs as "a strangers in a strange land." In addition to meals and gatherings, there are several ways to meed the immediate needs of these students. These may include transportation from the airport, being a conversational partner to help with language skills, and occasional transportation around town.
How to Get Involved
Riveroaks is blessed to have Lisa Goins (a member of our congregation) as a contact for these students at the University of Memphis. Lisa is working to coordinate the placing of students with families at Riveroaks. All interested families will need to attend an orientation session with Lisa to better understand cultural boundaries and receive menu suggestions. This is an exciting ministry, and it is open to families of all ages. If you interested in serving, please contact
Paul Vander Zwaag.
