Riveroaks Reformed Presbyterian Church annually holds its Vacation Bible School in June. Several years ago VBS challenged its participants to follow “Christian” on the road to salvation and ultimately “heaven” using materials especially written for Riveroaks based on “Pilgrim’s Progress,” the John Bunyan classic.
They began in the City of Destruction, Christian met companions throughout his journey exemplifying the struggles all believers face in their walk with the Lord. The “pilgrims” even experienced a day at Vanity Fair, a picture of the world without Christ. One of the most special days featured the “pilgrims” dropping their backpacks (burdens) at the foot of a large cross. Using daily journals, organized outdoor recreation, and lively singing, this VBS provided a fun-filled, summertime experience. Students and teachers alike were directed by God’s infallible Word, the Bible, on a simulated journey to the Celestial City (Heaven).
